2nd Grade Spelling Words

Welcome to our 2nd Grade Spelling Words section! The spelling program consists of 31 weeks of structured lessons, each focusing on specific phonetic patterns, blends, or rules. The program begins with short and long vowels in Weeks 1-5, followed by blends and specific word endings in Weeks 6-10. Weeks 11-15 cover vowel combinations and homophones, while Weeks 16-17 deal with plurals and soft/hard sounds. Weeks 18-24 focus on different word patterns, such as -ar, -er, -ook, and -aw, as well as the use of ew, oo, ow, and ou. In Weeks 25-26, students learn about diphthongs and compound words, and in Weeks 27-28, they cover contractions and dge/ge words. The program concludes with lessons on base words, tense changes, and words with y in Weeks 29-31.

You’ll find printable lists below for each week. If you’re working on 2nd grade spelling words with your child at home, consider trying a few fun activities to reinforce learning. For example, you might try the following:

  1. Word Scramble: Rearrange the letters of each 2nd grade spelling word and have your child unscramble them.
  2. Word Hunt: Ask your child to find the spelling words in a magazine, book, or online. This will help your child to recognize the words and also reinforce their spelling skills.
  3. Flash Cards: This is always a great way to reinforce learning. If your child spelled the word correctly, put the card in a “correct” pile. If they spelled it incorrectly, put the card in an “incorrect” pile. Rinse and repeat!
