Empower your students to reflect on how language reflects an author’s viewpoint, which is how the author feels about a topic. With the quotes provided, students will have an opportunity to determine whether the author’s viewpoint is positive, negative, or neutral. As an essential skill for mature readers, learning to determine the author’s viewpoint is integral to helping young readers build an understanding of tone and purpose. Use our presentation version to leverage engagement in a multitude of ways and expose students to many examples that challenge their thinking. By encouraging students to examine the relationship between what the author states and how they state it, you can also ensure that they are practicing communication, listening skills, and strategies for interpreting language with accuracy.
