Free Verse Poetry Langston Hughes Activity

Poetry study includes reviewing model poetry. When students review a model poem, it allows students to understand poetry with more depth. This one-page handout includes a poem from famed poet, Langston Hughes, called "Mother to Son." After students read this free verse poem, they will determine the main message of the poem and why the title is significant. Use this poem as a warm-up or as a homework task to encourage students to practice their poetry analysis skills outside of the classroom in preparation for the next day's discussion.
