Passage

Sophie did not like being the baby of the family. All of her four brothers and sisters were big and she was little. When she wanted to wear her sister Ella’s red dress, Ella said, “No! You are too little!”

When she wanted to ride Madison’s horse, Madison said, “No! You are too little!”

When she wanted to play a game with Jackson and his friends,

Jackson said, “No! You are too little!”

When she wanted to play with one of Carter’s cars, he always said, “No! You are too little!”

Then, one day, Daddy ran into the house and said, “Sopie, we need you! Come on!”

Sophie and Mommy ran out after Daddy to the barn.

All of her brothers and sisters were in the barn.

“We need your help, Sophie!” Daddy said. “A kitten is stuck in the hay and we cannot get her. Our arms are too big.”

With Daddy’s help, Sophie got on top of the hay.

“See, the kitten fell in that hole,” Daddy said. “All of our arms are too big to fit in the hole. Can your arm reach down into it?”

Sophie reached into the hole. “I feel him!” The kitten was warm.

“Can you pick him up?”

Sophie pushed her arm into the hole. “I think so.”

“You can do it!” Mommy said.

Sophie put her fingers under the kitten’s belly. “I have him!” Sophie pulled the kitten out of the hole and put it on her lap.

All of her family was so happy. “Hurray for Sophie!” her brothers and sisters said. They all clapped and laughed.

“I am so happy that I am little!” Sophie said as she held the soft kitten on her lap.

“So are we!” Mommy said.
