Pablo Neruda's "Ode to Sadness" is an emotional ode poem that students can analyze in order to understand the goal of this genre of poetry. This fourteen line poem gives students much to digest; there are rich images and the vocabulary Neruda uses will help students see the connection between diction and mood. To analyze, students will read the poem and then underline and collect words that show why the narrator dislikes the feeling of sadness. Finally, learners will have the option to draw a picture inspired by the poem.
