How to Write Cursive X

The cursive X is unique because it requires lifting the pen — one of the few cursive letters that isn’t formed in a single continuous stroke. The crossing strokes create its distinctive shape.

X Capital X in Cursive

  1. Start at the top left with a curved stroke down to the right
  2. Lift the pen
  3. Start at the top right and stroke down to the left
  4. Exit with a connecting stroke at the baseline

x Lowercase x in Cursive

  1. Start with an upward stroke, then curve down to the right
  2. Lift the pen
  3. Add a crossing stroke from upper right to lower left
  4. The exit stroke connects to the next letter

💡 Practice Tip

The cursive x is one of the few letters requiring a pen lift. Make the first stroke, then add the cross — similar to how you’d cross a t or dot an i at the end. Use the dotted-line worksheets below to build muscle memory.
