Underline the Helping Verbs

Tense, mood, and voice can be better expressed with the aid of helping verbs. Some examples of these include "be, do," and "have." Students will use twelve sentence to hunt for and underline all of the helping verbs. As you review the sentences with students, ask them to explain what they chose and why they underlined that word. It will be important to ask, "How is the helping verb making a difference in this sentence?" Ask more than one student to explain and reinforce the idea.
